The short answer
There is no single "best" AI — the right one depends on the job. Here's a plain-English cheat sheet.
By the job
- Writing, editing, long documents, careful reasoning → Claude (claude.ai). Strong at natural writing and following detailed instructions.
- Everyday questions, brainstorming, images, voice → ChatGPT (chatgpt.com). The most versatile all-rounder, with image generation and a voice mode.
- Anything tied to Google — Gmail, Docs, Search → Google Gemini (gemini.google.com). Convenient if you live in Google's apps.
- Research with sources you can click → Perplexity (perplexity.ai). Answers questions and shows where the information came from.
- Coding → Claude and ChatGPT are both excellent; many developers prefer Claude for larger projects.
- Privacy, offline, or zero cost → a local model like Llama, run through Ollama (see *Run AI on Your Own Computer*).
Free vs paid
Every major tool has a free tier that's plenty to learn on. Paid plans generally give you more usage, faster responses, and access to the newest, most capable models. Start free; upgrade only once you hit the limits.
A simple rule of thumb
Pick one to start and get good at it. Constantly switching tools slows you down more than any difference between them. When you hit something it's weak at, *then* try another for that specific job.
